SummaryThis course is concerned with the theory and practice of criminal justice. Focusing on, but not limited to, the United Kingdom jurisdictions, it considers the criminal process from the moment of arrest until the sentencing stage. It will cover topics such as arrest, pre-trial detention and bail, the right to silence, plea-bargaining and the guilty plea, pre-trial diversion, prosecutorial discretion, models of the criminal trial, exclusion of evidence and the integrity principle (including entrapment), orality and hearsay, the presumption of innocence, lay participation and nullification, protection of vulnerable witnesses, the role of the victim, appeals and review of criminal cases.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able to demonstrate (1) a critical knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of the criminal justice system from the point of arrest until the sentencing stage, including the reality of how the system works; (2) a familiarity with the main primary and secondary source materials in this area; (3) an ability to comment critically and engage in debate on the issues examined.
