This course examines the development of the portrait in an era of rapid artistic change. Follow the changing conceptions of character and personality from the classical portrait to the fragmented self of the postmodern era. Considering the place of the portrait in relation to history and events will be a key theme.

Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
Identify, describe and analyse portraits.
Identify, understand and use the appropriate terminology and concepts for these works.
Discourse on and discuss the meanings of the works.
Identify and understand the underlying theoretical, scientific, social and political contexts which underlie the production of this form of art.
Place portrait styles and types in a historical framework and context.
