SummaryThe aim of this course is to allow students to examine and explore health issues from a community nursing perspective, giving consideration to the necessary differences in approach when working with families in their own homes and other community settings. The emphasis is on the relationships between clients, informal carers, and practitioners in the community; interprofessional relationships in community nursing and the developing public health role of the community nurse.

Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the special nature of nursing in the community.
- Explore how the health needs of individuals, families and communities can be met in community nursing practice.
- Examine how interpersonal relationships, both with clients and other professionals affect the provision of nursing care in the community.
- Reflect on issues such as race, gender, violence and poverty and their impact on community nursing.
- Analyse the various aspects of accountability in community settings and recognise the potential for conflicting priorities.
