Postgraduate Course: Protein Molecular Modelling Practical Skills (PGBI11111)

Course Outline
SchoolSchool of Biological Sciences CollegeCollege of Science and Engineering
Credit level (Normal year taken)SCQF Level 11 (Postgraduate) AvailabilityNot available to visiting students
SCQF Credits10 ECTS Credits5
SummaryDuring a typical molecular modelling project a protein structure might be modelled by homology modelling, its motions simulated by molecular dynamics and possible inhibitors discovered by virtual screening. This course will look in detail at these techniques, and the students will be given practical experience of them within a typical molecular modelling computational environment
Course description Week 1 lecture Template structure selection for homology modelling/introduction to accompanying practical session
Week 2 Practical session on template selection
Week 3 introduction to Essay assignment, example paper analysis
Week 4 Homology model construction and validation
Week 5 Practical session concentrating on validation
Week 6 Model preparation for molecular dynamics
Week 7 practical session on preparing structure and starting dynamics run
Week 8 Dynamics trajectory analysis and validation
Week 9 Virtual screening methods.
Week 10 Scoring methods in virtual screening.
