SummaryThis course covers and assesses the initial phase of a Masters research project. The project topic is defined and the student will then be expected to perform an initial literature review. The student should also carry out preliminary project tasks in preparation for the main phase of the project itself. Finally the student should also outline a proper programme of work for the main project, addressing any potential risks or pitfalls. The work carried out in this course will be written up in the form of an interim report, which will be submitted at the end of the course.

Learning Outcomes
1. To enable students to perform a preliminary investigation and literature review of a complex research topic.
2. To enable students to make interim conclusions about a complex research question in a short space of time.
3. To learn to identify and prioritise the key sub-topics relevant to their chosen topic of research for further detailed investigation.
4. To develop a coherent and structured research proposal for the main project that covers the priority research items and addresses potential risks and problems.
