Summary | The course is designed as an introduction to the very broad field of international development. It aims to:
- Stimulate interest in international development issues
- Help students to become 'intelligent customers' of information on international development, through critical analysis of some commonly-used measurements and theoretical frameworks, and (further) developing critical listening skills
- Share some current debates and 'hot topics'
- Form a basis for more theoretical and detailed work in later courses
- Be an enjoyable and participatory course |

Session 3: Economic growth
Session 4: Inequality, social exclusion and gender
Session 5: Risk, vulnerability and social protection
Session 6: Reading week and preparation of essay
Session 7: Food security and nutrition
Session 8: Governance issues in development
Session 9: International aid (1): Institutions and the changing face of aid
Session 10: International aid (2): Aid effectiveness
Final review session: Mock exam, Feedback from mock exam and discussion, Q&A
