Summary | This course is intended to provide an introduction to the techniques used in LiDAR remote sensing. The course covers the underlying principles of the measurement techniques and the interaction of LiDAR signals with natural surfaces and the atmosphere. The course introduces the different airborne and satellite systems and related data processing methods. The student will also gain knowledge of the different applications of this RS approach for monitoring various aspects of the Earth's atmosphere, cryosphere and terrestrial surfaces. Urban and archaeological applications will be also addressed. Emphasis will nevertheless be given to forestry. |

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should have achieved and demonstrated, or be able to achieve and demonstrate, the ability to:
- Understand the key principles of LiDAR systems.
- Process and handle different forms of LiDAR data (waveform, discrete)
- Interpret the information contained within such data
- Place the value of LiDAR systems into the wider context of Earth observation
- Locate, read and summarise relevant literature, from traditional and electronic media
- Develop reasoned arguments, firmly grounded in the available literature
- Conduct practical and assignments, within the specified parameters and to a professional standard
- Take responsibility for own learning through reading and completion of assignments. Reflect upon learning experience
