SummaryThe course covers the topics of energy supply and demand, energy policy and social and cultural perceptions of energy using the same delivery approach and format to that already used for the successful online course 'Climate Change Impacts & Adaptation' as part of the Global Challenges MSc.
Course description This course examines various energy related issues from a scientific, economic, social and political point of view. This course will investigate the benefits and downfalls of various energy sources including traditional fossil fuels, unconventional fossil sources, renewable energy, biomass, biofuel and nuclear energy. It will also cover the topics of energy security, social perceptions, energy policy and energy as a geopolitical tool.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand to a high level the technical and economic benefits and challenges of the main energy sources
  2. Understand social, political and security challenges of various energy sources
  3. Have an in-depth knowledge of key international energy policies and a basic understanding of key regional energy policies
