SummaryIn this course, we critically examine the main ideas and arguments John Rawls' classic book, *A Theory of Justice* in some depth, and also look at how Rawls' views developed since the writing of that book, culminating in his more recent *Political Liberalism*, which we shall also examine in some depth. In association with each of these texts we will look at a variety of relevant secondary literature.

* Examine in depth the systematic political philosophy of John Rawls as it has developed from *A Theory of Justice* to *Political Liberalism*
* Assess whether Rawls's views are defensible
* Critically discuss different theories of justice and of political liberalism
* Critically assess Rawls's views about the separation of moral philosophy more generally from political philosophy and associated distinctions drawn in *Political Liberalism*
