SummaryThis course introduces the political economy of East Asia (broadly construed to include China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the southeast Asian region). It examines the economic performance of these states, and considers explanations for high levels of growth as well as the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997. Attention to the role of the state in economic development will be especially important, particularly the development strategies of the major East Asian states. We will also consider the phenomenon of regional integration in East Asia, its causes and consequences, and the role of external actors such as the IMF and the United States.
