SummaryThis course covers fundamental skills relating to the psychological research process, from developing research ideas to designing and conducting an experiment, communicating research findings, and knowledge transfer.

Additional Information (Assessment) Semester 1: 1000 word PhD research proposal prepared according to the PPLS postgraduate application guidelines, plus a 300 word lay summary of the proposed research. The proposal should usually be linked to the research theme of an academic member of staff within Psychology. Formative feedback will be provided, but a numerical mark will not be recorded.

Assessment Deadline: Thursday 19th November 2015, 12 noon
Coursework Word Limit: 1,000 words
Coursework Return Date: 11th December 2015

Semester 2: Poster presentation of MSc Dissertation proposal to be presented at Psychology MSc poster day. Formative feedback will be provided, but a numerical mark will not be recorded, only Pass / Fail.

Submission Deadline: midnight of day of Poster Presentation (Friday 19th February)
Poster Format: will be specified on the Learn pages
Poster Return Date: 14th March 2016
Feedback Formatively assessed using spoken and written feedback. Comments provided on submitted assessments

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand the relationship between research ideas and the formulation of testable hypotheses
  2. Communicate research ideas and findings in a variety of formats to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  3. Appreciate the importance of public engagement and knowledge transfer in the research process
  4. Understand ethical considerations relating to psychological research design
