SummaryThe course provides an introduction to sociological, social anthropological and psychoanalytical perspectives on religion and religions. Students will be introduced to the development of theory and practice in these disciplines. Attention will be drawn to the contributions and limitations of key contributors to these theories and practices. Emphasis will be placed in the tutorials on the writings of these key figures as well as on secondary issues.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Lived Religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam (REST08009) AND Global Religions: South Asian, Indigenous and New Traditions (REST08010)

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should usually have at least 1 introductory level Divinity/Religious Studies course at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this) for entry to this course. We will only consider University/College level courses.

Learning Outcomes
The course intends to equip its participants with the following:
- knowledge of the general development of sociological, psychological and social anthropological theory and practice in relation to the study of religion;
- an understanding of the contribution of these perspectives to the study of religion;
- an ability to critically evaluate sociological, psychological and anthropological debates in relation to the study of religion;
- an ability to demonstrate the identification of key terms and their meanings;
- an ability to demonstrate good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
