SummaryThe course explores six modern theories of religion in the context of debates on disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:
(1) show how to define 'religion' in the light of definitional theory
(2) engage critically with an illustrative selection of contemporary theories of 'religion'
(3) compare and contrast different kinds of definitions and theories of 'religion'
(4) apply theories to concrete case material
(5) defend their own preferred theory of 'religion'
