SummaryThe course aims to provide a broad introduction to a range of family policy issues of relevance to social and public policy in the UK and Europe. Taking the UK as its primary focus, it will examine key UK family policies in comparative perspective and across welfare regimes. It includes seminars on how family policies across Europe (and in anglophone countries) have addressed issues around changes in family structure, family formation and transition, work/life balance, care and obligations in family life, family support and resources and family violence.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least 3 Social Policy or closely related courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be expected to
1. Have an understanding of how family policy issues are articulated in social and public policies in the UK and in a number of European countries.
2. Have an understanding of the critical issues and policy responses in particular policy areas, including demographic change, work/life balance, care and obligations in family life, family support and resources and family violence.
3. Be able to compare and analyse policy responses to these issues across a range of European and anglophone countries.
