SummaryThis course will explore an activity in criminal justice social work practice assessment. This will be examined in a broad theoretical sense and specifically in relation to the core activities of assessment/ report writing for the courts and parole board.

A key component of assessment is the assessment of risk. The Report of the 21st Century Review of Social Work (Scottish Executive, 2006) calls for the development of new approaches and skills in risk management that promote excellence in social work and a move away from risk-averse, managerialist practice to planned risk-taking that protects individuals, maximises opportunities for their personal development and strengthens professional autonomy.

This course will provide a full understanding of the concept of risk, risk assessment and risk management within the parameters of best practice and statutory duties.
