| Summary | The course will introduce students to key texts and topics in the history of Scandinavian (Danish, Norwegian and Swedish) literature from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. The course will give students the opportunity to study a range of literary forms in context, aiming to develop skills in literary analysis as well as an awareness of different critical approaches to literature. The course aims to equip students with reading strategies that are sensitive to cultural and historical difference. |
| Course description |
The course covers the folk tale, Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales and travel writing, Henrik Ibsen's and August Strindberg's drama, the modernist novel, the crime novel, the horror novel, and modern and contemporary short fiction and poetry. These literary forms are situated in the context of cultural and ideological developments from Romanticism via the Scandinavian Modern Breakthrough into Modernism and Postmodernism as well as in the context of political and social changes from democratisation via the welfare state to the multicultural society.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of Scandinavian literature, including major literary periods and representative authors.
- Appraise texts within their historical and cultural contexts using appropriate literary vocabulary and terminology, and a range of critical approaches, and methods of interpretation.
- Engage with and interpret layers of meaning within individual texts and between groups of texts.
- Develop effective communication, presentation and interaction skills across a range of media.
