SummaryThe Geography field course provides experience and training via the undertaking of project work in a variety of field settings. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of research and practical skills necessary to undertake field-based research.
Course description This course is a week-long residential field course in Amsterdam open to 3rd Year students on single Honours MA/BSc Geography, MA Geography and Environmental Studies, and Sustainable Development (Geography Pathyway) students only.

Syllabus:
This is a 7-day residential fieldtrip in Amsterdam.
Day 1: Travel to Amsterdam
Day 2: Orientation day
Days 3,4, and 5: Staff-led teaching days
Day 6: Student group research projects
Day 7: Student group presentations, and return travel to Edinburgh
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Co-requisites
Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Geography Small Research Project (GEGR09007) OR Geography Fieldwork: Foundations (Physical) (GEGR09009)
Other requirements Students must also take Quantitative Methods in Geography OR Qualitative Methods in Geography AND Research Design
Additional Costs A contribution to cover travel and subsistence is required from students

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. demonstrate an ability to make connections between theoretical concepts in geography and real case-studies, and an understanding of the relationship between geographical theories and methods
  2. gain a grounding in a range of methodologies used in human geography, and an ability to critically assess their weaknesses and strengths
  3. demonstraate practical experience of designing and completing a small research project using teamwork and collaborative research
  4. gain the ability to behave safely, ethically and respectfully within a field work environment
