SummaryThe course focuses on introducing core concepts and theories of learning and scholarship whilst honing skills that enable students to become highly flexible and adaptive lifelong learners. Students will be able to reflect on their clinical practice and be introduced to using an ePortfolio to support integration of knowledge and experience over time. Students will identify their learning style and explore experimental learning as a way of enhancing their meta cognitive skills. Being a semester one core course, it offers a gateway for students who require to refine their education pathway, career development and professional practice.
Course description The Professional and Personal Development course focuses on the introduction of theories of learning, learning styles, models of learning and scholarship. This core content is then be used as the foundation from which critical engagement with the concepts of self-awareness and reflection is explored. The use of ePortfolios, as the mean of capturing evidence of personal reflective learning is developed, through active engagement of participants in activities that relate to their professional and personal development. Students will also hone their learning style and explore experimental learning as a way of enhancing their capacity for lifelong learning.

Overall the course aims to develop the capacity of individuals to reflect on their own learning and achievement within scholarship and practice. It is also set to enable the planning of own personal educational and career development needs within professional nursing practice and a health care environment.

Learning on this course be supported by weekly lectures, facilitated group work, a ¿master class¿ seminar as well as through self-directed studies and online learning. Specifically, the 10 weeks course will use a two hour weekly session for ¿face to face¿ interactions, with a structured online content of readings and prescribed tasks for students, to prepare in advance for the lectures /seminars. There are one session in the IT lab where students will be guided to create their ePortfolio.
