SummaryThis course is designed to introduce course members to key debates about ethics in the field of counselling and related practices. Relevant Codes of Ethics will be examined and discussed in relation to ethical issues, dilemmas and difficulties. Understandings and theories of boundaries within the person-centred approach and psychodynamic perspectives will be discussed. Theories and approaches used in counselling supervision will also be examined.
Course description This course is designed to introduce students to key debates about the related themes of ethics, boundaries, and supervision in the field of counselling and related practices. Codes of ethics will be discussed in relation to ethical issues, dilemmas and difficulties. Understandings and theories of boundaries within the person-centred approach and psychodynamic perspectives will be explored and theories and approaches used in supervision will also be examined.

Additional Information (Assessment) One 3,000 word essay/portfolio (75%)
plus assessment of listening practice (pass/fail)
Students are required to pass both parts of the summative assessment to pass the course.

Feedback Formative feedback will be given on all aspects of student's learning throughout the course.

Students will receive regular feedback from tutors, and weekly feedback from peers, on the development of their listening skills in their listening triads.

Summative feedback will be given on the course paper via Learn.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Formulate and clarify specific ethical issues and dilemmas in their own practice settings, with reference to Codes of Ethics and other relevant literature.
  2. Display a critical understanding of the role and management of boundaries.
  3. Demonstrate critical understanding, and ability to apply, the main theories and perspectives drawn from counselling supervision.

Graduate Attributes and Skills On completion of this course students should be able to:
- Consider ethical issues arising from counselling and related practices in relation to professional codes for good practice
- Show a critical understanding of boundaries in counselling and related practice
- Be aware of the key features of an effective supervision relationship and contract from the point of view of both supervisor and supervisee
- Demonstrate the capacity to reflect on personal attitudes, values and skills in the listening role and utilise feedback provided by others.
- Demonstrate an understanding of relationship and process in listening practice from both psychodynamic and person-centred perspectives
- Demonstrate the capacity to meet the core competencies for effective listening practice
- As a listener be able to identify areas of strength and areas for further development.
- Understand the role and function of contracting in counselling and related helping relationship
Additional Class Delivery Information Students have the option to attend just one of a possible three course deliveries a week. Once they have selected which delivery they attend, they must remain with that cohort for the entire course.
