Summary | This course is concerned with the study of operations management in sport and recreation organisations. Students will consider the processes of design, implementation and control of sport and recreation service operations. Examination of current practice will be undertaken throughout the course. |
Course description |
The course aims to link theory to practice and demonstrate an understanding of the role and scope of operations management in sport and recreation. It will focus on the effective and efficient management of human resources and physical resources in a range of facilities in the private and public sectors. This course will cover topics such as, how operations managers lead, direct and motivate the operational team to ensure a quality service delivery. Different approaches to the control and management of staff and customers, to how to deal with operational issues such as, accidents and emergencies and ensure compliance with statutory requirements and organisational policies and procedures. The course will cover relevant aspects of Health & Safety legislation and Employment Law.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the role and nature of operations management in sport and recreation organisations; explain the process of sport and recreation service design; discuss the implications of health and safety law for sport and recreation services delivery; explain how to control service operations; evaluate the appropriateness of identified quality systems to sport and recreation contexts; understand the relationship between human resource management and operational efficiency.
- Evaluate different quality systems and the process of enhancing customer experiences in the sport
- Understand human resource management and operational efficiency in the sport
- Understand the programming, design and management of space and facilities for sport and recreation
- Identify health and safety issues and risk management in the sport and recreation environments.
