SummaryStrategic sport planning will include consideration of the concepts of strategy and patterns of strategy development, using theoretical models of strategic planning. It will consider how strategies are developed and implemented in sport and recreation. Attention will be drawn to specific case studies and strategic appraisal in sport and recreation agencies will be undertaken.
Course description Strategic management theories linked to practice.
The role and scope of strategic management in sport and recreation.
External and internal factors that impact on strategic analysis.
Planning in a range of sport organisations of different sizes in the private and public sectors.
Practical implementation of sport strategies in contemporary sport organisations
Political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal contexts of strategic sport management.
Business planning and entrepreneurship in sport.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand key theories of strategic planning applied to sport and recreation
  2. Critically analyse the problems of formulating strategies for sport
  3. Appraise the management implications of strategic implementation
  4. Apply strategic planning to a range of case studies in various sport sectors
  5. Critically examine business planning in the context of contemporary sport organisations
