Summary | This course will examine changing nature of sport management and the increasing emphasis on management by objectives and benchmarking. It will consider the consequences of such changes for the management of sport and recreation services. Approaches to the definition and measurement of organisational performance will be considered and an in depth examination of performance measurement tools and their application to the sport and recreation context will be undertaken. |
Course description |
Students will examine the following topics:
Performance indicators used in sport and recreation organisations across all sectors.
Contemporary issues in the development of sport organisations
Leadership , equity and governance
Human resource management issues,
Performance related pay and rewards
Equal opportunities linked to training, personal development and staff appraisal. Organisational development and a managing change
The context of modern sport and the changing policy context in which sport and recreation services are delivered.
Implications for performance management in all sectors e.g funding, prioritisation
Key partnerships with other stakeholders
Students will be expected to demonstrate:
1. A knowledge of the scope, defining features, and main areas of sport and recreation management
2.Specialist knowledge in some areas, i.e. human resource management, organisation behaviour and organisation theory
3.A discerning understanding of a defined range of core theories, concepts, principles and terminology.
4. Awareness and understanding of some major contemporary current issues in sport management
5. Understanding of research and equivalent scholarly/academic processes in sport management

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the changing policy context in which sport and recreation services are delivered and the implications for perfomance management; - discuss the issues and actions underpinning the shift from objective-led management to management by objectives; - critically evaluate the concepts of inputs, outputs, service outcomes, intermediate and strategic outcomes; - evaluate specified performance measurement tools and various initiatives in the context of the sport and recreation management policy framework.
