SummaryThis course is designed to lead on from Persian 1 and provides a further development of linguistic skills in the modern language. Grammatical structures and oral skills are further developed. The course is intended not only to lay the foundation of Honours work, but also to be a self-contained unit. Knowledge of basic grammar structures will be revised and extended. Students will begin to acquire the vocabulary of educated reading and conversation.
Course description This course provides deeper understanding of grammar and linguistic skills in modern Persian. Detailed grammatical structures are provided. Oral skills are further developed through covering social and everyday topics. Selected texts in Modern Persian are studied. Aural skills are further developed by use of media. Vocabulary will cover a range of different social and cultural topics. There will be weekly quizzes and exercises to enhanced language skills. Translation is an important part of this course with regular translation home works and exercises.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Persian 1a (IMES08046) AND Persian 1b (IMES08047)

Feedback Feedback is frequently given to students in different forms for their different tasks such as home works, translations, weekly tests, compositions, oral presentations and aural exercises. Both oral and written, individual and group feedback are given for during the semester. Both summative and formative feedbacks are important.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Confidently use intermediate Persian grammar to read, understand and translate straightforward texts in Persian.
  2. Start a conversation in Persian on topics that are familiar, describe incidents, express their feelings, give prepared presentations. They will be able to describe a variety of familiar subjects and communicate about their experiences, ideas, opinion.
  3. Understand main points of discussion on familiar topics and everyday subjects. They will be able to understand straightforward information on familiar everyday topics.
  4. Compose a text of around 150 words on different familiar topics and explain, describe and discuss the subject forming longer sentences and using a variety of grammatical constructions such as different conjunctions.
  5. Assimilate information about Iranian culture. They will obtain a deeper understanding of Iran's history, literature, art and culture.

Study Abroad Year abroad will be after completing this course successfully. Students will be sent to Iran to study for the year abroad.
