DEGREE REGULATIONS & PROGRAMMES OF STUDY 2024/2025

Students should aim to divide the number of credits they take in each academic year evenly between Semester 1 and Semester 2

Entry to Honours:

(1) Students must pass courses to the required value of 240 credits in the first two years.
(2) Students must achieve 50% or more, at the first attempt, in Arabic 2.
(3) Students must achieve 50% or more, at the first attempt, in French 2 Language.
(4) Students must achieve 50% or more, at the first attempt, in French 2 Literature and Culture. If a student achieves a pass in French 2 Literature and Culture but fails to meet the 50% requirement, progression to Honours will be permitted if the student has achieved 50% or more at first attempt in ELCF08009 Politics and Institutions of Contemporary France A.

All courses (including outside subjects) must be passed before embarking on the year abroad; an outside course passed at Resit in August will be acceptable.

During 3rd year, when permitted, at least 30 weeks of approved residence must be spent in relevant countries. The minimum period of residence in the country of either language is eight consecutive weeks. During sessions when this is not permitted, students will be offered an alternative means of engagement.

Final Assessment Weighting:

One unit of assessment is allocated to every 20 credits and constitutes one 20-credit paper. The following are the twelve 20-credit papers on which the classification of the degree is based. (Papers that for the purposes of degree classification acquire a weighting of 40 credits are, therefore, listed twice.)

4. French 4 Honours Language Paper 1
5. French 4 Honours Language Paper 2
6. Oral for French
7. Year Abroad online language learning course - French
8. IMES Dissertation Part 1 or MEL Dissertation Preparation (same mark as 9)
9. IMES Dissertation Part 2 or MEL Dissertation Completion (see note below)
10. Honours option course in IMES
11. Honours option course in French
12. Honours option course in IMES or French

If students choose to complete their dissertation with French, papers 8 and 9 will be calculated as a combined grade, as follows: 10% from MEL Dissertation Preparation and 90% from MEL Dissertation Completion. Credits cannot be awarded for the MEL Dissertation Preparation course unless the full 2 year course is completed.

Arabic Coursework Essay, Persian Coursework Essay, IMES Long Essay, and any dissertation courses are only available for selection if they are listed in the degree programme's final assessment.
