SummaryThis course provides students with an opportunity to develop a special interest, apply the learning gained from their postgraduate studies in Years 1 and 2, and work towards professional and academic skills development and outcomes relevant to their special interest and the healthcare context in which they work.

Students will self-select an area of clinical special interest relevant to paediatric emergency or critical care medicine (PECM) and will develop two proposals over the year-long course:

1) Service Evaluation Proposal: Maintaining quality of practice in their area of special interest through research, audit, service evaluation or quality improvement (QI), and
2) Local Engagement Proposal: Communicating aspects of their area of special interest to a wider audience through teaching or community engagement.
Course description Advancing Special Interests in PECM will run as a year-long course in parallel to the compulsory Management Issues in Paediatric Emergency Medicine course (PECM11007).

Students will select a special interest topic in PECM and develop two project proposals:

1) Service Evaluation Proposal for a research, service evaluation, audit, or quality improvement (QI) project, AND
2) Local Engagement Proposal for a local teaching/education or community engagement project.

Students will propose, develop, and manage their own learning experience within a supported learning and assessment framework.
Students must evidence and reflect on how they achieve the learning outcomes and develop their academic and professional knowledge and skills to make change within their professional context.

This is a fully online course worth 40 credits. Students are expected to spend 400 hours in total on the course.

The course will involve a combination of synchronous and asynchronous tutorials, tutor meetings, presentation sessions and self-directed learning.

There are a number of assessment components distributed across the year of study to help scaffold the students learning during this course. Marking rubrics will be available for all components and students will receive assessment templates where appropriate. Students will be offered choice and flexibility in a number of components as detailed below.

Feedback The course assessment aligns with the University of Edinburgh Assessment and Feedback Principles and Priorities in designing assessments that are inclusive and equitable, based around the student¿s local healthcare context and experiences. There will be several opportunities for feedback and conversations with students.

Students will receive focused, formative feedback from their tutor/course organiser on two key components: First Thoughts and the Interim Reflective Report. Students will also receive feedback on their Proposal Presentations from the course organiser and fellow students.

Students will receive extensive summative feedback on their First Thoughts, Final Reflective Report, Proposal Presentations and Final Proposals. Marking rubrics will be shared with students for all assessments.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Gain enhanced knowledge and expertise through depth and breadth of reading enabling better clinical delivery of their area of special interest in their local community.
  2. Demonstrate their ability to critically evaluate clinical practice, current and future, and maintain quality by service evaluation, local engagement and reflective practice.
  3. Develop skills which will enable them to engage with and communicate aspects of their special interest to a wider audience - e.g. colleague, peers and local communities -based on the most up to date evidence and which is appropriate for their professional environment.
  4. Develop their reflective skills and critically reflect on their learning.
Reading List
The Reading List will be determined by the student¿s area of special interest. Students will be supported by the course organiser and tutor in directing their independent reading and completing their annotated bibliography.
Learning resources for the reflective component of the course are provided online, in the ¿SLICCs Resource Pack¿ at: https://edin.ac/sliccs-resource-pack. These resources include guidance to students on: reflective learning and reflective models; collecting and curating evidence of their learning using an ePortfolio; writing reflective reports on their learning; using the PebblePad workbook and reflective blog. There are also extensive and more detailed resources to support reflection, in the ¿Reflection Toolkit¿.
