| Summary | Access Languages and Cultures 2 is a supportive and intellectually challenging continuation of Access Languages and Cultures 1. In Access Languages and Cultures 2, students will further develop their knowledge of French language and culture, as well as strategies and skills required for the successful study of any language degree programme at the University of Edinburgh. |
| Course description |
Access Languages and Cultures 2 is an A2.1 French language and culture course taught in French. Students will continue developing linguistic skills through a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities and will gain knowledge of basic linguistic structures and concepts transferable to any language degree. Weekly 2.5-hour tutorials will be student-centred, with small group task-based language learning activities. A range of technologies will be employed, both in the classroom, and in students' work outside class, with a view to developing individuals' familiarity with digital technologies employed in learning. In addition to weekly language classes, students are expected to undertake a substantial amount of study on a regular basis.
The course will include both formative and summative assessment components. Formative assessments will consist of two written assignments and a group presentation with formative feedback. Summative assessment will consist of two class tests, an oral exam and a final exam. A mark will also be awarded for tutorial participation. In addition to support and feedback at course level, all students on the Access Programme will engage via an online learning journal, where they will be prompted to reflect on their learning experience, feedback and progress and will receive personalised guidance and support.
Students will also be encouraged to participate in informal learning activities at the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, where they will have the opportunity to meet with students and tutors in various languages. Attention will also be made to providing opportunities for extracurricular cultural and social engagement activities, which are intended to complement students' studies, increase cultural capital, encourage engagement with peers and communities, and build a sense of belonging.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate linguistic and communicative knowledge in the French language allowing an understanding of a variety written and oral texts.
- Produce short written texts and oral presentations on various topics related to personal matters, social life, education, and engage in interactions with a small audience.
- Use simple grammatical structures correctly and understand the principles according to which languages are organised.
- Use a lexical repertoire related to specific domains of the language, including personal matters, social life and education.
- Demonstrate understanding of some aspects of the culture of countries where French is spoken and engage in an intercultural reflexion.
