SummaryThis course introduces you to critical structural, technological and environmental principles that underpin architectural design. It seeks to help you understand not only how buildings need to work functionally to keep their occupants safe and secure, but also how such considerations can produce deeper, more meaningful architecture. You will learn how buildings can be seen as interacting systems and that structural, material and environmental strategies are interlinked.
Course description The course is delivered through three Concept Gateways:

Structures
Materials
Environment

A typical week has an orientation lecture, a two-hour workshop with tasks linked to the Gateways and an hour tutorial to work in your assignments. Reading material further supports students progressing through the Gateways.

Pre-requisites Co-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students also take Architectural Design: Elements (ARCH08001) AND Architectural Design: Assembly (ARCH08004) AND Architectural History 1A: Introduction to World Architecture (ARHI08009) AND Architectural History 1B: Revivalism to Modernism (ARHI08004) AND Art and Design (ARCH07001)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate understanding of the key concepts in the physical behaviour of structural systems and their application in architecture;
  2. Appreciate the integral nature of material assembly and environmental systems to the development of architectural designs;
  3. Demonstrate breadth of knowledge and understanding of the principles of architectural structures, material assembly, environmental systems, and sustainability in the built environment.
