SummarySemester 1 Course aligned with Design: Strategy and Intervention specifically for EMILA students.

Students will explore precedent projects in the field of Landscape Architecture related to the design direction of their own work and make place specific investigations and analysis that are brought together in a research report and visual analysis. (4000-5000 words).
Course description Course Aims:
1. Articulate landscape architectural proposals in wider contexts of art and design theory and practice.
2. Document, structure and reflect on research which supports the design process.
3. Relate individual and specific design decisions to wider contexts and concerns of Landscape Architecture.

Students will develop disciplinary and trans-disciplinary expertise by exploring the convergence of art, design, science and technology to develop a portfolio of projects that articulate an advanced and autonomous position on contemporary ecological and cultural issues. Students should seek research led projects that provide valuable intelligence on how Landscape Architectural collaborations provide a basis from which to address complex global issues such as environmental change, spatial planning and cultural resilience.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Undertake a deep investigation of the design project site and reflect on the significance of a place based approach to design.
  2. Select, analyse, compare and present examples of design and theoretical precedent critically.
  3. Research precedents in landscape architecture and related disciplines as a means to articulate and reflect on themes and parallels which inform the design process.
