| Summary | This post-introductory course is intended for students who have successfully completed Foundation Korean Language 2 or have reached an equivalent standard (Standard Grade/TOPIC- Test of Proficiency in Korean, Korean Language written test for non-native speakers under the Ministry of Education in Republic of Korea). It is not suitable for absolute beginners or students with knowledge of Korean at Highers/A-level or above. This course runs in semester 2.
All students take all elements of assessment, including the examination. Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed. |
| Course description |
In this course students will develop Korean Language skills to intermediate level where they could engage in conversation on travel, shopping information, asking favour to other people in polite manner etc. The lectures will be taught in larger groups, while separate tutorials will entail smaller groups. In the tutorials, students will be able to practice speaking and writing. Classes will be conducted in an interactive manner, combining PowerPoint presentations by the instructor and role play among students. You will learn how to comprehend and compose short to relatively long essays in Korean.
The following list is a description of the contents of the course. Along with each topic and function, relevant vocabulary, grammatical and textual structures, and culture notes will be introduced.
Using the honorific form to introduce yourself and exchange personal information.
Explain reasons for decisions.
Talking about everyday life in the past.
Asking for travel information.
Suggestions and negotiations.
Asking for permission and explaining why you can't do something.
Adjectives in relation to shopping.
Indirect speak (other ways of politely asking for something).
Talking about rumours.
Sending messages.
Students who successfully completed beginners' Korean Language course (Foundation Korean Language 1,2) could take this course. This course will allow students to have more confident conversation particularly over those topics and achieve intermediate level of Korean language skills.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Speaking and listening: Students will be able to divide situations into the language to be used appropriately for formal and informal situations. Students will be able to speak confidently at situations of travel, shopping etc. and distinguish formal and informal ways of daily conversations.
- Writing and reading: Students will be able to find the information they need to allow them to travel, shop and receive messages and pass on information.
- Cultural perspective: Students will be able to understand basic rules, permissions, negotiations and suggestions that would be encountered in daily life.
- IT skills: Students will be able to search online using a Hangul keyboard and type essays comfortably in Hangul.
