| Summary | Chinese 2 aims to enhance students' Chinese language proficiency to an intermediate level, emphasising practical communication skills. The course focuses on comprehending and utilizing Chinese grammar within daily conversational contexts. Using authentic materials, it emphasises expressions relevant to everyday life. Students will practice reading contemporary texts with reduced reliance on dictionaries, engaging with both simplified and traditional characters while developing diverse writing styles. |
| Course description |
The course consists of 5 components:
1) New Practical Chinese Reader
2) Listening
3) Reading & Writing
4) Oral Tutorial 1
5) Oral Tutorial 2
New Practical Chinese Reader: This class aims to help students achieve an intermediate level of proficiency in Chinese through a structured progression covering grammar, vocabulary, and practical knowledge relevant to daily life in China.
Listening: This section focuses on improving students' listening abilities, enabling them to comprehend and engage in conversations reflecting everyday scenarios.
Reading and Writing: This section is to equip students with the ability to read authentic Chinese texts using simplified and traditional characters. Additionally, they'll develop writing proficiency by composing Chinese pieces of up to 500 characters, allowing them to express themselves coherently in written form.
Oral Tutorials: These sessions encourage students to actively participate in discussions, enhancing their listening and speaking proficiencies. Tailored around popular topics, these conversations facilitate the development of better communication and comprehension skills in practical contexts.

Feedback will be offered regularly as part of learning process where appropriate, e.g. after an assignment or an assessment. Students will expect to receive their feedback and mark in three working weeks after the submission. Students are also encouraged to reflect upon their own learning, and make their own list of action points after each feedback session.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand how Chinese grammar works and apply these skills at an intermediate level.
- Read and comprehend short essays, fiction, and select popular articles in both simplified and traditional Chinese characters to an intermediate level.
- Write summaries, blogs, and letters in either simplified or traditional Chinese.
- Apply their knowledge to everyday contexts, utilizing their skills to handle straightforward tasks with some non-routine elements and to prepare for familiar and routine tasks.
- Express their views and opinions on popular and essential topics through participating in interactive conversations.
