SummaryThe course will explore the effects of both naturally occurring and manmade chemicals on reproductive and developmental toxicology.
Course description This course will explore the potential for toxic effects of xenobiotic agents or chemical substances on the development and reproductive capacity of individuals. The agents examined will include both environmentally occurring and manmade chemicals, such as endocrine disrupting compounds, pharmaceutical compounds and recreational drugs. The course will explore the evidence for and against their effects on the fertility of adults, children and future progeny.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Reproductive Biology 3 (BIME09006) OR Physiology 3 (BIME09004) OR Pharmacology 3 (BIME09003)

Essay: 60% of course mark
Oral presentation: 40% of course mark
Feedback Students will be given a chance to practice their oral presentations, and receive verbal feedback on this.

Students will also be given the opportunity to carry out a formative assessment for their essay (mock manuscript), again, receiving verbal feedback on this work.

Finally, tutorial classes will be structured to allow students to ask questions, and gain feedback on the data interpretation skills that they will develop throughout the course.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Gain an understanding of the development and physiology of male and female reproductive systems
  2. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the underlying mechanisms of action of selected reproductive toxicants within reproductive physiology.
  3. Develop analytic abilities and critical thinking skills by critically reviewing and explaining scientific
  4. Effectively communicate concepts in the discipline area of reproductive toxicology research verbally.
