SummaryThis course builds on the 'Introduction to One Health policy' course to provide a comprehensive overview of governance mechanisms in international health and development, and discuss how transdisciplinary approaches could further enhance these in the 21st century.
Course description The weekly content is proposed to follow this framework in the first instance, but may be revised during the lifetime of the course:

Week 1: Analysis of key global health, environmental and development actor-networks

Week 2: Global Health Governance (GHG) and the disease prioritization process

Week 3: The Sustainable Development Goals and Transdisciplinarity: A focus on Neglected Tropical Diseases

Week 4: Critical analysis of One Health initiatives from the global governance perspective

Week 5: Developing a One Health policy toolbox to address global challenges

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Follow the evolution of international health diplomacy to global health governance and their relevance to One Health
  2. Identify key global health and development actor-networks, and assess their various roles in international health governance
  3. Discuss the current political and institutional challenges - and potential solutions - of international health and development diplomacy
  4. Develop a 'policy toolbox' to promote successful cross-sectoral solutions to 21st century challenges
Learning Resources
The course will draw from current literature and other publications relevant to the topic. A reading list will be provided to support the course content.
Additional Information
Graduate Attributes and Skills The study materials provided in this course will enhance the student's abilities to search for, read and understand the relevant scientific literature, to use this to support specific arguments and to present the findings in a coherent and appropriate way. They will also develop skills in 'Transdisciplinary policy approaches for addressing the public health and development challenges of the 21st century' through the use of an online learning platform, online search engines and word-processing and presentation packages. Online discussion with tutors and peers will develop confidence in communicating with others and the skills to engage in high level academic discourse. The independent study aspect of the course will enhance the student's abilities in time-management and self-motivation.
