| Course description |
Increasing awareness of and concern for the natural environment and the impacts of human activities led to an expansion of legal frameworks through the 20th and into the 21st Century to govern the protection of both biotic and abiotic environments. This course investigates the hierarchy of protective measures and instruments from international conventions and agreements to legislation at the regional and state level. This is not a law course but instead students will explore the connection between overarching international environmental commitments and the delivery and enforcement of regulations relating to biodiversity, wildlife and ecosystem health.
We will look at the scope of issues and environmental priorities at state level and the means and extent to which these are addressed, and upheld. The course will explore the capacity of national authorities and agencies to deliver environmental protection across a number of themes including: protected areas and species, 'obligations to the commons' of atmosphere, marine and transboundary impacts, and environmental justice. The course involves a strong element of self-directed study where students will have the opportunity to investigate their own national environmental law landscape.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the major international treaties relating to the environment.
- Demonstrate an understanding of how the translation of international treaties into national legal frameworks.
- To critically analyse the interaction of national and international legislation in relation to environmental and species protection.
- Investigate and describe the implementation of environmental laws at the home state level.
