SummaryThis course is designed for undergraduates to critically understand the economic and financial implications of incorporating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) into business decision-making, revealing both the challenges and prospects it poses for businesses and investors. With heightened scrutiny from regulators and the financial community, understanding the impact of sustainability on financial markets is more critical than ever.

This course is tailored for those students eager to understand and analyse the impact of sustainability/ESG on our environment, economy, and society and for those who seek to capitalise on the shift towards sustainability by consumers, businesses, and society at large.
Course description The course will initially present evidence regarding the economic and financial implications of ESG, followed by an examination of the resultant policy and regulatory measures. A critical review of empirical research exploring the impact of ESG on financial markets will prompt students to contemplate innovative perspectives on how changing views of ESG influence established financial markets.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically analyse the impacts of ESG on the economy and finance sector.
  2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of methodologies for quantifying and managing ESG risks.
  3. Conduct a critical examination of various theories and actual practices within the realm of sustainable finance.
  4. Assess and appraise the necessity for regulatory frameworks.
  5. Develop the capability to formulate plans and suggest strategies for enterprises and asset managers that emphasise generating impact in addition to financial returns.
