SummaryIntroduction to Professional & Clinical Skills - the course is the first of progressive courses in each year of the BVM&S degree programme.
Professional skills:
The first year course will cover what is expected of a professional, introduce self-appraisal and recording progress, to be continued in future years. The emphasis will be on establishing an understanding of basic professional attributes and behaviour, with a focus on self-appraisal, group working and study skills. Linkages will be made with other courses where aspects of professionalism are highlighted.
Clinical skills:
The module will introduce students to basic clinical skills and the concept of assessing a clinical case using the SOAP (subjective, objective, assessment, plan) approach. GEP classes will focus mainly on developing observation, palpation and auscultation skills relevant to the dog.
Course description This course develops the theme of personal and interpersonal skills and communication skills, with an emphasis on inter-personal skills, client perspectives, the human-animal bond and clinical examination of the dog.

Additional Information (Assessment) 1. Attendance - in accordance with the BVM&S Attendance policy, attendance is expected at 100% of practical and tutorial classes for all courses. If you are unwell and cannot attend you should inform the Year Administrator and arrange to catch up on missed classes as per the above policy
2. Successful Completion of Drug Calculations on Learn with 100% correct answers (multiple attempts are allowed). To be completed on Learn between November and January
3. Reflective essay submission via Learn in January (forms part of portfolio)
4. Formative practical OSCE assessment in March
5. Portfolio Submission - A complete portfolio must be submitted by May.

PASS/FAIL result

RESITS
Students will be required to complete a resit activity and supply any missing pieces of work, or resubmit any unsatisfactory assessment items.
Feedback Instant feedback is given for the Drug Calc & Online formative (Clinical Skills) assessment. Verbal feedback will be given during clinical skills classes.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Summarise the personal attributes and behaviours required to be a successful veterinary professional, with awareness of the importance of e-professionalism, teamwork, effective time management, independent learning, financial awareness and maintaining health and wellbeing
  2. Reflect on the workload and study skills differences when transitioning from school to university and select appropriate resources to support this transition
  3. Demonstrate how to perform a routine health check consultation on a dog, integrating theoretical knowledge of behaviour, husbandry and nutrition, with the communications skills required to ¿take a history¿ alongside practical skills to facilitate a clinical examination
  4. Confidently demonstrate a range of Year 1 appropriate common clinical techniques, including drug dose calculations and administration, bandaging, suturing, and diagnostic sample collection on veterinary simulators and mannequins in the clinical skills lab environment
  5. Reflect on progress in Year 1 academically, practically and personally, with specific considerations given to EMS placements, time/stress management, communication skills and academic performance, to identify strengths and weaknesses, and be able to communicate these effectively in a variety of formats (e.g. in an essay and as part of a portfolio)
