Summary | All engineers make use of fundamental scientific principles to design and construct the future. They work in teams to solve complex problems within the ever-changing environmental, societal and policy landscape. In this context, Civil and Environmental Engineering 1 aims to develop the skills of analysis, synthesis and communication used every day by professional engineers. The course will provide the fundamentals needed to allow student to begin to develop an understanding of technical topics that are specific to Civil and Environmental Engineering and apply this understanding to solving practical problems. Civil and Environmental Engineering 1 will be delivered as a combination of in-person lectures and seminar sessions, in-person workshops supported by lectures, and classroom based practical sessions. |
Course description |
Students will be introduced to a combination of technical topics (20 hours of lectures) and engineering skills (10 hours of lecture). The material will be supported by: tutorial exercises (10 hours) which will focus primarily on the technical topics; and workshops which will allow the engineering skills to be practiced in the context the technical topics. In addition, there will be a revision session (2 hours).
The skills aspects of the course will focus on deepening knowledge and understanding of core skills that are relevant for all engineers (and other professionals) with Civil and Environmental Engineering specific exercises.
This will include:
1. Engineering design iteration including visual representation;
2. Data analysis and interpretation using relevant civil engineering tools including use of uncertainties and error analysis;
3. Technical writing including use of collecting information, information management, and data presentation.
The technical content will be covered in five core areas:
1. Statics and equilibrium (including free body diagrams and hydrostatic pressure);
2. Water and Environmental Engineering (including catchment dynamics, open channel flow, and BOD);
3. Solids and Civil Engineering materials including (pedogenisis and two-phase materials, concrete, steel and timber);
4. Civil Engineering structural solutions (including trusses, bridges, resisting moments, and catenaries).
5. Civil Engineering failures and Institutions (including disaster case studies, and professional codes of conduct).

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
