Summary"Digitalisation" has been transforming the construction industry in the last decade. Driven by the benefits of well-structured digital information during both the construction and the operational phase of built environment assets (buildings or infrastructure), construction projects are now effectively being delivered in two ways: physically and digitally. Terminology often used for this transformation includes "Building Information Modelling" or BIM, Information Management, and/or Digital Twinning, to name a few. This requires modern civil and construction engineers to be equipped with the skills to (1) produce and make use of smart, digital models of construction assets, and (2) work collaboratively with multiple other professionals through the exchange and delivery of structured digital information. The course will equip the students with the knowledge and skills and will do so through a combination of lectures, computer lab activities, combining individual and group work.
Course description The course is delivered over one semester and is split into two parts: information modelling and information management, reflecting the important fact that Building Information Modelling (BIM) is "the process of generating and managing information about a building [or infrastructure asset] during its entire life cycle" (BSI).

Introduction:
- What is BIM?
- Why is BIM needed?
- The history of BIM

BIM Information Modelling:
- The dimensions and maturity levels of BIM
- 3D modelling*
- Model enrichment*
- Model interrogation*
* These items are explored in computer labs.

BIM Information Management:
- BIM standards (ISO 19650 series; BS 8536) and guidance
- Interoperability (OpenBIM standards; Uniclass; COBie; FIRie)

Summative assessment for this course will be conducted through two semester projects (around computer-based modelling and information management).
Formative feedback is provided in class during lectures and tutorials, in the computer labs during the computer lab sessions, and during surgery hours.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Articulate the need for and challenges of information management in the construction sector;
  2. Develop a basic Building Information Model (BIM model) using BIM authoring tool;
  3. Enrich and manipulate BIM models with semantic information to support a given use case.
  4. Illustrate their knowledge and skills about information management in construction by defining Information Requirements and corresponding BIM Execution Plans for realistic examples.
