SummaryWhat is TEXTILES?

This course provides a series of project briefs, to help students understand what textiles is, and what textiles can be. Students will be introduced to this rich discipline through a series of 3 projects, problems and challenges, encouraging them to ask questions and seek answers through practical and conceptual exploration of the textiles discipline and associated art and design fields.
Course description This course introduces a range of core competencies and understanding relating to Textiles, which will form a foundation to enable and sustain subsequently more focused and self-directed study in the subject. There is a strong practical focus to all activities.

Projects will help students experiment with a range of inspiring and unexpected approaches to design, as a means to develop and enrich ideas. Drawing will be developed as a language to convey possibilities and solutions for design projects, in the context of textile design.

Research: Students will be introduced to a range of approaches to gathering relevant visual and textual information, as a means to inform and inspire new ways of thinking, making and drawing. These will be recorded in a variety of formats including sketchbooks, digital and analogue research files, and drawing portfolios. The research will also provide a basis for understanding the larger framework for the students' future aspirations as a designer.

Practical exploration: Using drawing in its widest sense, as a means to explore ideas, tasks will encourage individuals and groups to explore and experiment with colour, texture, pattern, materials, image and form through a series of hands-on approaches. The understanding and increasingly sophisticated approach and use of materials is an important aspect of textiles and will underpin all practical activities.

By questioning, exploring, discovering and discussing findings through the practical activities and the focused research, students will be encouraged to begin to make sense of the dual roles of research and practical exploration in the generation of original ideas to suit a range of project briefs and themes.

They will subsequently be encouraged to reflect and re-consider intentions for further development before submission at the end of the course.

Learning and Teaching activities (Further Info) Total Hours: 200 ( Seminar/Tutorial Hours 7, Supervised Practical/Workshop/Studio Hours 36, Feedback/Feedforward Hours 1, Formative Assessment Hours 1, Summative Assessment Hours 1, Programme Level Learning and Teaching Hours 4, Directed Learning and Independent Learning Hours 150 )
Assessment (Further Info) Written Exam 0 %, Coursework 100 %, Practical Exam 0 %
Additional Information (Assessment) This course has 3 assessment components.

These are comprised of 3 projects which are delivered consecutively.

Project 1 30% assessed in Week 4
Project 2 35% assessed at December exam diet
Project 3 35% assessed at December exam diet

Project 1 will be summatively assessed at a mid-semester point Week 4 and will require the student to demonstrate research, exploration in response to the briefed tasks and requirements. This assessment will make up 30% of the Summative total for the course and will be assessed against all 3 Learning Outcomes.

Projects 2 and 3 will be assessed at the December diet summative assessment point and will account for 70% of the summative assessment, with each project accounting for 35% each and with each Learning Outcome equally weighted.

These projects will require responses to the further 2 project briefs, with each project submission addressing all Learning Outcomes through:

· Sketchbooks
· Drawing exploration
· Textile/material exploration, sampling and resolved pieces
· Technical notebook
· Supporting boards and Research

When learning the professional skills to address the range of projects briefs, students may be asked to submit additional design documentation in alternative formats to respond appropriately to a specific requirement of a project brief.
Feedback Formative Feedback

Formative reviews will take place at the end of Project 2 and Project 3. Students will be given the opportunity to develop and complete each project before summative assessment.

Written or Video (audio-visual recording) formative feedback will be provided at the end of Project 2. This will be supported by student self-assessment. Verbal feedback will support the formative review of Project 3 and will be supported with student review.

Feedback will be provided throughout all project delivery. This will take the form of individual verbal feedback and through group presentations facilitating discussion and additional feedforward points. Summative Feedback Individual written feedback and grades will be provided via Learn VLE as per university regulations.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an inquisitive exploration of a range of approaches to textiles, recorded and presented in an appropriate format.
  2. Explore materials, themes and imagery associated with textiles through practical experimentation.
  3. Communicate an increasingly individual approach to drawing, research, and idea development centered around the discipline of textiles.
