| Summary | This course provides the grounding for focused exploration of the textiles discipline with an emphasis on drawing, mark-making, printed textile approaches and repeat pattern.
Textiles have a wide range of applications and require textile designers to be conversant with both current and past practices and to be adaptable to human, social, economic and environmental sustainability, technology, trends, colour and materials development. |
| Course description |
This course builds technical competences in the practice of textile design through a series of weekly tasks aligned to a range of techniques and associated textile focused pre-occupations, for example, print and repeat mechanisms for textile design, and colour/trend prediction.
Students will have the opportunity to explore independent themes and personal directions within the framework of the design briefs provided.
The projects encourage students to build and reflect on their understanding of print technique and colouration of design and/or materials within the context of current practice in the field.
Weekly 4-hour studio and workshop-based activities are exploratory in nature and include:
- focused primary and secondary research underpinning each project
- discussion, debate and exploration
- technical textile exploration within technical facilities and with appropriate making methods
- studio based activities to aid creative development of design ideas, propositions and outcomes.
Students work to explore and challenge methods and materials through practical and digital exploration. Students will be supported in extending their technical competence in their outcomes, which are aligned to current practice in the textiles industry.
Projects may align to, but are not limited to the following areas of focus:
- The use, application, and imagining of colour trends, colour application and design futures.
- Exploration of textile pattern repeat for printed textiles.
- CAD exploration for colour, pattern and contextual presentation of designs.
Through a series of briefs, this course challenges groups and individual students to explore established approaches and, through studio workshops, prompt innovative techniques through print, pattern, colour and through the development of relevant CAD knowledge.
This course will reinforce learning from Core courses Textiles 1A and Textiles 1B, to allow the application of drawing, mark-making and image creation into practical exploration of colour, print and textile design.

| Pre-requisites | If this course is Core to your programme, you will automatically be enrolled. For all other Design students, the course is open on a first come, first served basis until the course is full. It is recommended that students would require a basic experience of textile technique and methods, for example, sketchbook work and drawing, preparation of artwork for print and basic photoshop skills. See the following courses for further guidance of experience equivalent to :- Textiles 1A, Textiles 1B. Please contact the Course Organiser if you wish to enrol. |

| Additional Information (Assessment) |
This course has 3 assessment components.
These components are comprised of 3 projects which are delivered consecutively.
Project 1 40% assessed in Week 4
Project 2 20% assessed at December exam diet
Project 3 40% assessed at December exam diet
Project 1 will be summatively assessed at a mid-semester point Week 4 and will require the student to demonstrate research and development of ideas and sampling towards the given brief with working towards a final outcome. This assessment will make up 40% of the Summative total for the course and will be assessed against all 3 Learning Outcomes.
Projects 2 and 3 will be assessed at the December diet summative assessment point and will account for 60% of the summative assessment in total, with Project 2 weighted to 20% and Project 3 weighted to 40% of the summative total.
These projects will require responses to the further 2 project briefs, addressing both technical and design skills and evidencing them through a series of physical and digital outcomes, in formats as outlined in each project brief. |
| Feedback |
Formative Feedback
Formative reviews will take place at the end of Project 2 and Project 3. Students will be given the opportunity to develop and complete each project before summative assessment.
Written or Video (audio-visual recording) formative feedback will be provided at the end of Project 2. This will be supported by student self-assessment. Verbal feedback will support the formative review of Project 3 and will be supported with student review.
Feedback will be provided throughout project delivery. This will take the form of individual verbal feedback and through group presentations facilitating discussion and additional feedforward points.
Summative Feedback
Individual written feedback and grades will be provided via Learn VLE as per university regulations. |
