SummaryThis course enables specialist textiles students to extend their textiles and material expertise in depth. Practical and theoretical research underpins all activities. An understanding of application and context for the outputs of investigations additionally inform direction. Students are supported and challenged by academic and technical experts in the field to extend their practical skills and development of personally led projects defined through courses 4A and 4B.
Course description This course affords time and space for extensive experimentation in a specialised field. Through a series of project challenges, students will extend their knowledge and understanding of the wider applications of materials and textile-focused expertise.

Technical skills will be further extended from experience gained in year 3 textiles and courses textiles 4A and 4B. All activities will be driven by personal in-depth investigation by the individual student. Students will be encouraged to engage with relevant technical provision across the University and beyond as well as the facilities within the textiles department, encouraging a creative approach to the exploration of materials.

Through challenging the research gathered and precedents set, individuals will refine explorations through a series of iterations to develop resolved solutions for focused contexts as defined in their personal project proposals for courses 4A and 4B. All of this will be recorded in an appropriate format.

This course has one summative assessment submission, a portfolio of work containing three distinct elements, each explained in more detail below. Each submission element comprises 33.3% of the overall course mark.

Submission 1 relates to LO1 may include but is not exclusively limited to the following: A range of material and technical samples, research files, dye-notebook, technical notebook or equivalent. This is 33% of the final course mark.

Submission 2 relates to LO2 and may include but is not exclusively limited to the following:
Sketchbooks, notebooks and technical files showing notated investigation integrated with relevant research This is 33% of final course mark.

Submission 3 relates to LO3 and should include concluded samples. This is 33% of final course mark.

Relationship between Assessment and Learning Outcomes:

All 3 Learning Outcomes are assessed, and are equally weighted, in all 3 summative portfolio elements for this course.
Feedback Formative Feedback will be provided on a regular basis throughout the course. This will take the form of individual verbal feedback, plus group presentations with staff and peers.

Formative feedback linked to the formative assessments points will be given in week 11 semester 1 and week 11 semester 2. This will support students in planning towards summative assessment, and will also be supported by self assessment.

Group presentations and crits will facilitate discussion and ongoing formative feedback from peers and staff throughout the course. Summative grades will be provided via Learn.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. EXPLORE materials and techniques, experimenting in depth to key challenges, and responding to research findings
  2. PLAN and RECORD ideas for design development linked to advanced technical exploration
  3. RESOLVE a collection of solutions in response to textiles-related design challenges and developed technical investigations
