SummaryIn a competitive global marketplace where professional and original brand communication is increasingly vital, it is key for fashion students to understand the importance of individual identity and where their 'brand' fits into an ever changing, fast-paced industry.

The Design Book course enables students to develop a highly personal, creative and focused fashion portfolio giving them a strong individual communication platform to showcase their design skills to a wide fashion industry audience. The course also supports students career positioning by strengthening skills in employability, including CV building, professional verbal communication skills, and identifying career routes after graduation.

Please note; The course 4C: Design Book-Professional Positioning for Industry allows students to collate and edit key work from 4A and 4B towards the production of a professional fashion portfolio. The course 4A delivers a structured framework of project briefs allowing students to undertake an advanced, in-depth and personal research and design investigation for their graduate fashion collection. The course 4B: Graduate Collection: Garment Technology-Prototype and Manufacture encompasses the final prototyping and completion of all fashion collection garments.
Course description You are required to create a 'Design Book' for Fashion that will express your resolved collection development and outcomes for the full study year. This portfolio presentation should be dynamic, original and highly personal clearly communicating your work to a targeted industry audience. This course primarily involves the selection, editing and collation of previous research and design proposals, amalgamated into a clear overall brand narrative.

You are required to challenge the use of standard fashion portfolio formats to generate a professional, creative and visually expressive portfolio, considering the layout, page composition, materials, finishing techniques and binding methods/cover design.

The DesignBook will also include a section titled 'Professional Positioning for Industry', where you will visually communicate intended career aspirations, a professional creative CV, external competition engagement, professional experience, and edited archived projects completed in Years 1-3.

You will also be required to include a draft 'lookbook' showcasing your collection work on a model, positioned to a specific targeted industry audience.

The Design Book will be produced as both hard copy and digital formatting, addressing the current industry demand for both formats.

You will develop the following advanced key skills including:

Creative layout and presentation skills using an integrated approach to type and image.
Knowledge of typographic hierarchies and narrative structure within publication design.
Develop an awareness of high-end finishing techniques, including materials, binding and special finishes.
Develop advanced competencies in Fashion Illustration.
Develop a range of methods and techniques necessary for the purpose of establishing a strong, dynamic and outward facing presentation of project work to a relevant audience.

Advanced communication skills for industry

Formative Design Book submission points on this course will incorporate edited and collated documentation of the research and design investigation completed in Fashion Design 4A: Graduate Collection - Research and Design, as well as the development of final prototypes and outfits completed through the course, Graduate Collection 4B: Garment Technology - Prototype and Manufacture.

Additional Costs Costs may vary between students, depending on paper/print sources. The overall cost of prototyping and production may be between £100-£200. Students would be expected to budget plan accordingly and are encouraged to investigate a range of effective printing and production options.

COMPONENTS OF ASSESSMENT
Component 1 - (relating to Learning Outcome 1) A Design Book presentation in hard copy and/or digital formats which incorporates a clear narrative structure documenting research concepts, design processes and resolved illustration and technical specifications.
Component 2 - (relating to Learning Outcome 2) A Design Book presentation in hard copy and/or digital formats which demonstrates a high degree of originality in the Cover design and overall aesthetic, and professionalism in the layout, format, page composition and typography.
Component 3 - (relating to Learning Outcome 3) A Design Book presentation in hard copy format which communicates a coherent strategy for future professional career positioning, directed to a specific targeted audience and showing brand awareness. Please note that the hard copy format is required for the summative submission only.
Feedback Verbal Feedback/Feedforward will be given during individual student tutorials.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
