Course description Academic Description:
The course offers a close study of extended selections from the Hebrew Bible: introduction, translation, and exegetical commentary. It is a companion course to Biblical Hebrew Texts B and may be taken either in isolation or along with that course for students, who want to build a focus in Hebrew Bible.

Syllabus/Outline Content:
The course has two aims: First of all, it focuses on enhancing primary-text language skills for Honours students and on introducing them to historical-critical exegesis, while, secondly, it gives an introduction to key texts from different parts of the Hebrew Bible.

Student Learning Experience Information:
The first session gives an introduction into the chosen parts of the Hebrew Bible. The further sessions will concentrate on translation and analysis of texts as well the discussion of motifs and themes. Interactive elements will enhance the student experience, while the different forms of assessment will help them to demonstrate the learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Read and translate biblical Hebrew texts of different genres, including ¿unseen¿ texts.
  2. Analyse, parse, and explain a range of regular and irregular gramma:cal and syntac:c forms in biblical Hebrew
  3. Understand text critical issues emerging from biblical Hebrew texts
  4. Incorporate language skills into exegesis of texts of the Hebrew Bible.
  5. Understand debated issues around the translation, linguistics, and interpretation of biblical Hebrew.
