| Summary | The dissertation is an extended piece of scholarship in which students have the opportunity to study in depth a topic largely of their own choosing in the field of economics. It is the component of a masters programme which most clearly differentiates it as an advanced degree programme, and is the point at which the student progresses from structured coursework to independent study.
Students on the Econometrics programme must utilise econometrics in their work. |
| Course description |
The dissertation should provide an opportunity to apply core economic concepts and theories to research a topic of the student's choice in depth and provide a summary report on the recent theoretical or empirical advances in the related area including the evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the analysed papers.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Have had the opportunity to demonstrate investigative research skills in identifying and framing a research question/topic of economic relevance as well as devising a sound approach to comprehensively investigate the chosen question/topic.
- Have had the opportunity to demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of the key principles and techniques of analysis used in the relevant literature to address a given question/topic, including recent research at, or close to, the frontiers of current knowledge.
- Have had the opportunity to synthesize and critically evaluate complex evidence and arguments and identify competing assumptions and predictions as well as the resulting insights and conclusions.
- Have had the opportunity to make own contributions in the investigation of a given question/topic demonstrating knowledge and skills in qualitative argumentation, quantitative techniques, and data analysis.
- Have had the opportunity to develop and demonstrate personal effectiveness and intellectual autonomy through, inter alia, task-management, time-management, dealing with uncertainty, adapting to new situations and making decisions based on their understanding and working independently.
