Summary | This course introduces a range of key critical issues in the field of digital education, explored through variety of collaborative and individual learning activities. The course aims to provide a snapshot of some of the current technological possibilities and challenges in digital education, and to discuss some of the key practical and theoretical issues in the field. During the course, students will experiment with a variety of environments and media for communication and for learning from discussion boards and blogs, to social media and engage with a range of conceptual areas important to research and practice in online education. In terms of assessment, students will use a blog to record and reflect on their studies, and complete an additional assignment on a relevant issue in digital education. |
Course description |
Digital education is a broad category with ever-evolving dynamics. It includes the relation between teaching, learning and digital technologies; the role of big data and AI in education; the changing nature of education due to contemporary apps and platforms; the EdTech industry; the political economy of digitalisation; and much more. This course will help you to get a sense of contemporary field of digital education and the connected educational technology.
This course is the first course you will take when you start the Digital Education programme. It will give you the opportunity to explore a range of key themes, as well as become familiar with studying online, and engage in academic thinking and writing. The course will give you the chance to engage hands-on with different technologies and connected material we find and use in education. You will take part in stimulating, confidence-building collaborative activities, which will be backed up with a high level of tutor support.
This is a double credit course, successful completion of which will gain you 40 credits toward your MSc.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:

- Critically reflect on key concepts, theories, and ideas from the research of digital education.
