| Summary | Justice systems are a core component of the child protection system - yet these systems are often not child-friendly or in many places nascent or under resourced. What is the best practice for international research and practice with children and the justice systems? This course will engage students with justice for children including child witnesses, child victims and child offenders from an international perspective. |
| Course description |
This course will explore international research and practice with children (I.e., under 18 years) and the justice system, including child witnesses, child victims, and child offenders. The course will discuss concepts and theories that underpin knowledge of engagement with children in the justice system (e.g., developmental theories, juvenile justice).
Topics will include disclosure processes, identifying child victims, child offenders, policy and practice on victims and offenders, and child rights as applied to the justice system.
Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI) - Online Fusion Course Delivery Information:
The Edinburgh Futures Institute will teach this course in a way that enables online and on-campus students to study together. This approach (our 'fusion' teaching model) offers students flexible and inclusive ways to study, and the ability to choose whether to be on-campus or online at the level of the individual course. It also opens up ways for diverse groups of students to study together regardless of geographical location. To enable this, the course will use technologies to record and live-stream student and staff participation during their teaching and learning activities. Students should note that their interactions may be recorded and live-streamed. There will, however, be options to control whether or not your video and audio are enabled.
As part of your course, you will need access to a personal computing device. Unless otherwise stated activities will be web browser based and as a minimum we recommend a device with a physical keyboard and screen that can access the internet.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Critically compare and contrast concepts, theories and frameworks underpinning child justice.
- Articulate perspectives of child justice, considering child witnesses, child victims, and child offenders.
- Critically examine global issues in child justice.
- Conceptualise the key measurement issues in global issues in child justice to advance solutions.
- Demonstrate critical understanding of key global debates in the child justice field.
