Course description This course will focus on translation from Spanish into English, looking at a range of styles and registers.

Summative: Two 2-hour Examinations 100%

1 Written Exam at the end of each semester during exam diets (2 in total) - 50% each = 100% total.

The exams will consist of one text each of (approximately) 500 words translated from Spanish to English and will be 'Closed book', i.e. no dictionaries or electronic devices allowed. (As per current DELC guidelines, a hard copy of a monolingual English dictionary may be allowed for non-native English speakers.) A Spanish language glossary will be provided with the exams by the Course Organizer.

The above assessments meet 3 of the 4 Learning Outcomes:-

1. Translate competently from Spanish in a variety of styles and registers and in a range of genres
2. Deal effectively with cultural and linguistic differences between texts in Spanish and English
3. Engage successfully with register, idiom, rhythm, nuance and ambiguity in translation.
Feedback A formative assessment is included in the middle of each semester in order to give students feedback on their work. A text will be assigned for translation, the work collected and feedback for improvement and/or praise for successes given. This will help students to prepare for the final exam at the end of the semester.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. translate competently from Spanish in a variety of styles and registers and in a range of genres;
  2. deal effectively with cultural and linguistic differences between texts in Spanish and English;
  3. engage successfully with register, idiom, rhythm, nuance and ambiguity in translation;
  4. demonstrate competence in the identification, analysis and evaluation of the translation problems that the texts raise with reflection upon process.
