Summary | This course will introduce students to Italian literature and culture from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. By focusing on a selection of seminal literary, philosophical and political texts, students will learn to analyse them and situate them in their historical and cultural contexts. |
Course description |
Students will undertake four modules over the academic year, with two modules delivered per semester.
The course focuses on four seminal figures in Italian literature: Dante Alighieri, Niccolò Machiavelli, Giacomo Leopardi, and Umberto Eco. Through close textual analysis of their works, the course explores the historical, cultural, political, and social contexts in which these authors lived and wrote, thereby offering a comprehensive understanding of their intellectual and artistic contributions.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a broad understanding and knowledge of the main Italian literary and historical developments from the 13th to the 21th century.
- Deepen the understanding of aesthetic and thematic aspects raised by the texts studied in relation to their cultural and socio-political contexts.
- Develop critical skills and improve command of literary terminology and rhetorical techniques. Demonstrate familiarity and engagement with the recommended secondary texts in relation to the texts studied.
- Demonstrate acquisition of certain transferable skills, including the ability to elaborate concepts, to evaluate evidence from different perspectives; to construct coherent and effective arguments.
