Summary | This course will introduce students to Italian literature and culture from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. By focusing on a selection of seminal literary, philosophical and political texts, students will learn to analyse them and situate them in their historical and cultural contexts. |
Course description |
Students are offered 4 modules per academic year (2 modules each semester), including 3 modules on key Italian authors (Dante Alighieri, Niccolò Machiavelli, Giacomo Leopardi) and one module on cultural studies (Europe Italy Rome - Decolonisation Impossible).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a broad understanding and knowledge of the main Italian literary and historical developments from the 13th to the 21th century.
- Deepen the understanding of aesthetic and thematic aspects raised by the texts studied in relation to their cultural and socio-political contexts.
- Develop critical skills and improve command of literary terminology and rhetorical techniques. Demonstrate familiarity and engagement with the recommended secondary texts in relation to the texts studied.
- Demonstrate acquisition of certain transferable skills, including the ability to elaborate concepts, to evaluate evidence from different perspectives; to construct coherent and effective arguments.
