The course examines modes of representation of gender as theorised in contemporary cultural studies. The course will begin with an analysis of the concept of gender as it has been articulated in feminist theory. Particular attention will be paid to the sex/gender distinction and the ways in which consideration of different styles and representational media have problematised the usual understanding of gender as a cultural construct. Topics to be covered will include film theory, gender in visual culture, literary theory, representations of gender in science, history and popular culture, and questions of gender in non-Western cultures. |
