Course description |
FEALL Plus 1 develops skills in academic language and literacies that are essential for success in undergraduate study and the IFP. Academic writing in FEALL Plus 1 introduces academic expectation, structuring and organising arguments, and appropriate use of sources with guidance on how to approach tasks with academic integrity. You will learn effective strategies for reading and engaging with academic literature to build coherent arguments, develop, and manage your critical ideas. You will also listen to a range of multi-modal content and communicate effectively using language skills designed for class participation and tutorials.
FEALL Plus 1 is for you if your international qualifications are not accepted for direct entry into undergraduate study.The course will focus on strengthening your academic writing skills, developing key cognitive skills (such as critical and analytical reading), and using research and evaluating sources. You will gain experience in speaking and listening in Higher Education contexts (e.g. academic discussion, delivering presentations, and tutorial communication). You will learn self-direction and how to manage the complex demands of Undergraduate study.
FEALL Plus 1 will provide you with opportunities to work collaboratively with your peers in pairs and small groups. You will also use a range of appropriate technology to develop key digital literacies. Weekly optional office hour appointments will provide you with ongoing support, feedback, and guidance on how to improve your academic skills. You will receive written and verbal feedback throughout the course designed to support your learning journey and help you to develop lifelong learning skills.

To pass the course, students must achieve a minimum of 40% overall, meeting all Learning Outcomes.
Students who do not pass the course will be offered the opportunity to resit in accordance with Taught Assessment Regulations.¿
The mark needed for progression to undergraduate study is normally 60%; however, this may vary depending on the receiving programme.
As FEALL Plus 1 is developmental of successful student outcomes and supportive of your work in the IFP, you will be offered multiple formative assessment points throughout the term to prepare you for graded assignments. Class content will also focus on key skills needed for assignments and will scaffold essential content for both FEALL Plus 2 and the wider IFP.
