SummaryGerman Language Stage 1 for IFP offers a unique opportunity to learn one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.

You will develop communication skills that will enable you to engage in basic everyday conversations in German. You will also develop intercultural competence and learning strategies.

This course will allow you to continue to German Foundation Language 2 or equivalent when you progress to your undergraduate degree studies.
Course description German Language Stage 1 for IFP is a complete beginners language course intended for students on a University of Edinburgh International Foundation Programme who have met the specific English language requirements for their chosen degree programme.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will achieve the equivalent of A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) (https://www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/table-1-cefr-3.3-common-reference-levels-global-scale) and will have developed your confidence in holding a basic everyday conversation.

You will develop these basic linguistic skills through a variety of listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. The course focuses on language that is required for communicating in real everyday situations, such as introducing oneself and others and talking about the daily routine.

The course will include autonomous learning activities, which enable you to practice and consolidate your skills. You will also reflect on your learning strategies.

As you progress through the course, you will learn more about the cultures associated with the language in the context of how to:
- Give personal information
- Talk about daily routine
- Express likes and dislikes
- Ask for and give directions
- Describe your home, your town
- Ask for goods and services

You will explore the use of the language in a supportive and inclusive learning environment, allowing you to increase your familiarity with and confidence in using the target language.

We follow an action-oriented communicative approach. The lessons include whole-class activities and pair or small-group work, role-play, responding to short texts, listening to dialogues, and watching video clips. Grammar is introduced in context. Pronunciation is practiced regularly. You will develop strategies and skills for language learning reflecting on what works best for you.

Learning is assessed formally throughout the course, with the teacher providing regular feedback to help you progress and plan your independent learning.
